How Shutter Speed Impacts Movement

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

This morning I visited a fly in at Coolidge, AZ airport. This offered an opportunity to demonstrate how Shutter Speed setting impact movement on an image. Below are 5 images that demonstrate the stopping and blurring of the movement of the propeller of a plane taxiing onto the runway. Note the shutter speed and the propellers.

Shutter 1/8000 @ F3.2 ISO 400

Shutter 1/3200 @ F5.6 ISO 400

Shutter 1/1250 @ F9 ISO 400

Shutter 1/500 @ F22 ISO 400

Shutter 1/200 @ F22 ISO 400

As shown above, the faster the shutter speed, the move it stops movement and the slower the shutter speed, the more movement is portrayed in the image. I hope this demonstration of shutter speed and its impact on movement has been beneficial.

Now with that understanding of shutter speed and the impact it makes on movement in an image, you can design your exposure to tell the story you desire to author.
